Breast Cancer Surgery and Care
What is Breast Conservative Surgery?
Breast Conservative Surgery (BCS), also known as lumpectomy or wide local excision, is a procedure in which only the cancerous lump and a small margin of surrounding healthy tissue are removed, leaving the majority of the breast intact.
Key Benefits
- Preserves natural breast shape and appearance
- Shorter recovery compared to mastectomy
- Usually combined with radiation therapy for complete cancer control
- Effective for many early-stage breast Cancer
At Shivansh Cancer Center, we use advanced imaging and surgical precision to ensure maximum cancer removal with minimum impact on appearance.
What is Sentinel Node Biopsy?
Breast cancer can spread to lymph nodes under the arm (axilla). Traditionally, many lymph nodes were removed to check for cancer spread, which often caused complications like swelling (lymphedema).
Sentinel Node Biopsy (SNB) is a modern, less invasive procedure where only the first few lymph nodes (sentinel nodes) that drain from the tumor are removed and tested.
Advantages
- Minimally invasive, fewer lymph nodes removed
- Reduces risk of lymphedema and shoulder stiffness
- Accurate staging of breast cancer spread
- Faster recovery and less discomfort
At Shivansh Cancer Center, SNB is performed using safe dyes and tracers to identify sentinel nodes precisely.
What is Oncoplasty?
Oncoplasty is a combination of oncology (cancer surgery) and plastic surgery techniques. It focuses on removing breast cancer effectively while also reconstructing the breast for the best cosmetic results.
Approaches in Oncoplasty
- Rearranging remaining breast tissue after tumor removal
- Using flaps or grafts for reconstruction if a larger portion is removed
- Performing surgery on the opposite breast for symmetry if needed
Benefits
- Restores natural breast shape after cancer surgery
- Improves emotional well-being and self-confidence
- Allows larger tumors to be removed while preserving appearance
