Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor Care

The bones and soft tissues of the body provide strength, movement, and support. When abnormal growth of cells occurs in these areas, it leads to bone and soft tissue tumors. While many of these tumors are benign (non-cancerous), some can be malignant (cancerous) and spread to other parts of the body. Malignant tumors of bones and soft tissues are often called sarcomas.

At Shivansh Cancer Center, Jodhpur, we specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of bone and soft tissue tumors. Our multidisciplinary team of orthopedic oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and rehabilitation experts work together to deliver advanced, compassionate care tailored to each patient.

What Are Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors?

Bone and soft tissue tumors are rare Cancer that can affect people of all ages, including children, adolescents, and adults.

Bone Tumors: These originate in the bones. Some common malignant types are osteosarcoma, Ewing’s sarcoma, and chondrosarcoma.

Soft Tissue Tumors: These arise in muscles, fat, blood vessels, tendons, and connective tissues. Malignant types are collectively known as soft tissue sarcomas.

Causes and Risk Factors

The exact cause of bone and soft tissue tumors is not always clear. However, certain factors may increase risk:

  • Genetic conditions (Li-Fraumeni syndrome, Retinoblastoma gene mutations)
  • Previous radiation therapy to bones or tissues
  • Chronic bone diseases like Paget’s disease
  • Exposure to harmful chemicals
  • Family history of sarcomas

Symptoms of Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors

Bone Tumors
  • Persistent bone pain that worsens at night or with activity
  • Swelling or lump over a bone
  • Frequent fractures with minor injury (pathological fractures)
  • Restricted movement near joints
Soft Tissue Tumors
  • Painless lump or swelling in muscles or fat tissues
  • Increase in size of lump over time
  • Pressure symptoms like pain, numbness, or difficulty moving a limb
  • Unexplained weight loss and fatigue in advanced cases

Diagnosis at Shivansh Cancer Center

Accurate diagnosis is essential to plan effective treatment. At our Center, we use:

  • Physical Examination to assess lumps, pain, and mobility
  • X-rays for bone evaluation
  • MRI and CT scans to visualize tumor size and spread
  • PET scans to check for metastasis
  • Biopsy (needle or surgical) to confirm if the tumor is benign or malignant
  • Blood Tests for tumor markers in certain cases

Prevention and Early Detection

While bone and soft tissue tumors cannot always be prevented, early detection improves treatment outcomes. Patients should:

  • Pay attention to persistent lumps or bone pain
  • Seek medical advice for fractures without injury
  • Undergo regular check-ups if they have a family history of sarcomas
  • Avoid exposure to harmful chemicals and radiation whenever possible
